How to Make Your Own Reusable Cleaning Wipes
How To Make Your Own Reusable Cleaning Wipes
Time to ditch the disposable cleaning wipes filled with petrochemicals and bleach and get reusable! Yes we know they are so handy, but in reality, they cause so much waste, and they aren’t really that great to be using around kids or pets, or yourself! Not to mention, they’re expensive!
The chemicals in bleach and the antibacterial agents in the disposable cleaning wipes can trigger allergies, asthma, and other respiratory issues just by using these on your common household surfaces – touching or breathing these chemicals in can trigger these health issues.
In reality, you DON’T need bleach or antibacterial petrochemicals to make your home clean. There’s a difference between cleaning, and disinfecting; cleaning is wiping up a spill or a mess, etc., while disinfecting means to kill bacteria on a surface (this can be done easily with hydrogen peroxide). Hydrogen peroxide is a handy tool to keep in the kitchen to disinfect areas handling raw chicken, sinks, and cutting boards.
To recap why commercial cleaning wipes aren’t that great:
-
They’re Wasteful – single use and immediately get tossed into the trash and into landfill
-
They’re toxic – contains so many harsh chemicals that can lead to harmful side effects
-
They’re Expensive – these are literally like throwing your money away since they are single use
For cleaning up messes, you can make these DIY Reusable Cleaning Wipes. Making cleaning more sustainable and healthy for your family and our environment. Use them to clean kitchen counter tops, coffee tables, door knobs, bathroom surfaces, dusting, etc.
What you’ll Need:
-
Container for your wipes and liquid – like a glass jar! *Needs to be airtight*
-
5 drops of each of Essential Oils (we like lavender, lemongrass, tea tree, or peppermint the best!)
-
2-3 Cups Water
-
2-3 Tablespoons Liquid Castile Soap (Dr. Bronners works great)
-
1/8 Cup Hydrogen Peroxide
-
Reusable Cloth Wipes, old t-shirt, old towel
How To:
-
Add half of the water to the air tight container then add the liquid castile soap
-
Add 5 drops of each essential oil and mix well (we recommend using combos of 2 scents)
-
Cut the reusable cloth wipes to your preferred size
-
Roll or fold each one and place in the jar or container
-
Add the rest of the water and hydrogen peroxide
-
Close lid & shake well
-
Clean up without the chemicals!!!
-
Toss into the washing machine when soiled – low temp, hang dry!
This formula will last about a week and the hydrogen peroxide will help keep the water sanitized.
Keep dirty ones separate from clean ones and make new batch when needed.
